Safety and Road Conditions

For current road conditions call 511. You’ll hear information on Kentucky’s interstates, parkways, and major routes. You may also check road conditions at one of our Welcome Centers or highway rest areas. The information is also available on-line.

If you should become involved in an accident, you should call the Kentucky State Police on their toll-free emergency line 800-222-5555.

Time Zones

Kentucky is divided into two time zones. Most of the north central and eastern portions of the state are on Eastern Time, while the southern and western portions are on Central Time. The entire state observes Daylight Savings Time. The time line is indicated on the Official Highway May. 

Climate

No matter the season you’ll love Kentucky’s mild climate. Summers can be very warm, but cool evenings are not unusual. For spring and fall, it’s a good idea to carry a light jacket. Snow totals vary widely from west to east across the Commonwealth. January has an average high temperature of 40 degrees F; July’s average is 87 degrees F.

Alcohol

The legal age to buy alcohol is 21 and it is not available in every county. To check local availability it is advisable to call your destination. View the list of areas where alcohol may be purchased.
